the saltpond education project

A continually evolving school-building and literacy project for underprivileged children in Saltpond, Ghana.

our mission

Truly free schooling
Imaginative billingual learning
Wide access to English and local-language literature
Community-led development
Teacher training

A small, grassroots organisation run solely by volunteers, we invest in local people - galvansing the community so that they can run the project themselves whilst learning vital skills. We do this by providing constant support, funding, teaching resources and teacher training.

Beyond the building and education programme itself, we are slowly finding ways to improve access to reading and imaginative, billingual learning.

We regularly send volunteers out to school and would love to hear from teachers and education specialists in particular. Please do get in touch if you would like to know more.

Building is complete on our lovely new school, and we opened for teaching in September 2010. By investing in inspiring members of the community, we have worked hard to create a project in which the local people feel involved - with a trusted team of local labourers and many friends in Saltpond, without whom the school just wouldn't be able to function.

We now have 60 children on our register - split into three classes and led by headteacher Michael Ofori, and supported by his brother Emmanuel. We are pleased to welcome Alberta, our new KG1 (nursery) teacher, to the team. All of our teachers have a great deal of experience and are brilliantly dedicated to helping the underprivileged children in their community to gain an education. We provide fresh water and a cooked meal to every child on a daily basis.

There is still a huge amount of work to do on-site, but we aim to fulfil our wider aims for the school by January 2012, which include bathrooms, a fully stocked library, an I.T. area, office and playground. Improvement of literacy levels and access to reading are major focuses for us, and we look forward to broadening our impact and using our findings in order to make positive changes for the wider population, as the project develops.

We are particularly focussing on teacher training and development at the moment. If you are a teacher or education specialist and can provide advice or resources, or if you would like to volunteer, please get in touch.
